Raymond Clark is one of the scientists who disappeared from Tsalal Arctic Research Station.
History[]
Raymond Clark and the other scientists at Tsalal were searching for a microoranism in the permafrost that had the potential to reverse aging. Their work was hastened by the mine pollution, which softened the permafrost, allowing them to collect better samples more easily. When Annie Kowtok discovered what they were doing, she started destroying their research. Anders Lund found her and started stabbing her. Her screams attracted the other scientists, who joined the attack. When they were done, Raymond Clark, who had been dating Annie and sat out the attack, went to her. When he saw she was still alive, he smothered her with his t-shirt.[1]
Clark was at Tsalal Station when he started convulsing. Fellow scientist, Facundo Molina, checked on him, but he only said, "She's awake," and the power went out at the station.[2] The women of the town had discovered that the scientists had killed Annie, so they stormed the place. They gathered the scientists, except Clark, who had escaped down the hatch into the ice caves.[1]
When Bill Wallis arrived later, everyone in the station was missing. Their bodies were later found buried in ice.[2] However, when the bodies had partially thawed, they noticed that there were only six there. Lund had been alive and was taken to the hospital, while Clark was not with them.[3]
Navarro and Danvers later found Clark in the ice caves and discovered that the Tsalal Station had a hatch that led directly into the caves. Clark attacked both of them and trapped Danvers in a freezer and then knocked Navarro out with a fire extinguisher. However, both escaped and taped Clark to a chair. Navarro then forced him to listen to the video Annie had recorded as a way of torture. When they returned, he told them what had happened to Annie, leaving out that he'd smothered her. When Danvers left the room, he begged Navarro to kill him or allow him to kill himself. After recording a video of him confession to all the mine's pollution and how it tied into the station's research, Navarro freed Clark, who walked outside and sat down until he froze to death.[1]
Relationships[]
He met Annie Kowtok when she came along with Susan Ineak, who came to Tsalal to cut the scientists' hair. They talked all night that first night and hit it off.[4] He dated Annie in secret until she was killed. To keep their relationship a secret, he purchased a trailer for them. Four days after Annie's death, he got a tattoo on his chest to match the one she had on her back.[3]
He was estranged from his mother, who hadn't spoken to him in ten years and considered him dead to her.[3]
Career[]
He was a paleomicrobiolgist working at Tsalal. He started working there in 2005. Prior to that, he was a Research Director at Trinity College in Dublin from 2003-2006.[2]
