Summary[]
December 31. 14th Day of Night
Danvers and Navarro break through the ice. Once there's a hole, Navarro slips through. From the surface, Danvers asks if she can see anything and if it's safe. Navarro says it's safe, so Danvers slips through as well. They start exploring. They both have an odd feeling. Navarro asks Danvers about it, but Danvers brushes it off. Navarro starts hearing voices and stops. Danvers asks her what she's doing. Navarro says it's here and goes a different direction. Danvers follows. They squeeze through tight passages. They reach a dead end, but Navarro wants to keep going. Danvers tries to get her to go back, but she refuses to go and then she falls through the floor. Navarro claims no injuries, so Danvers tells her stay put and she'll find some help. Navarro admits that Danvers was right and they should have stayed on the path. Suddenly, Danvers falls through as well. Navarro looks around and spots Raymond Clark. He runs when she sees him and they chase after him. They find a room with a generator and Navarro turns it on, revealing an intricate setup. They search for Clark, but don't find him. They look up and see bones encased in the ice.
Navarro says there has to be another exit. Danvers finds a weapon that appears to be responsible for the star-shaped wounds on Annie's body. She takes a picture while Navarro continues looking around. Navarro finds a shelf and they pull it out to reveal a ladder going up. They start climbing. When they get to the stop, Danvers opens a hatch that leads into Tsalal. "Twist and Shout" is still playing.
Pete cleans up Danvers' house. He puts the wrapped bodies in his truck, then showers.
Danvers and Navarro search Tsalal for Clark. Navarro sees wet foot prints on the floor and follows them. Danvers unplugs the DVD player to make the music stop. Clark uses an access badge to trap Danvers in a freezer, then he knocks Navarro out with a fire extinguisher. Danvers tries to break the glass, but is unsuccessful.
Navarro wakes up as she's being dragged.
Danvers is finally able to break the glass and exits. She finds Navarro beating Clark up and pulls her off him, saying they need him to talk. They have no way of contacting anyone or going anywhere with the storm. They're stuck. She makes Navarro help her with Clark.
As Pete puts on the finishing touches, he notices a tooth in the wall. Leah comes in and startles him. He tells her Danvers isn't there, which surprises her because Danvers asked her to come over for New Year's. She asks why Pete is there. Kayla won't like it if he's staying there. Pete says Danvers went out. She had a work emergency. He tells her he thought he'd make himself useful by cleaning. She notices something wrong with him and asks. He says the thing with Kayla has him messed up. He offers to drive Leah back there, so Kayla and Darwin won't be alone on New Year's Eve. When she turns to walk out, he pulls the tooth out of the wall and then follows her out.
Danvers and Navarro have taped Clark to a chair. He says he won't talk to them. Navarro asks if he actually loved Annie. He says he did. She plays Annie's video for him. He immediately starts begging her to turn it off. She plugs in headphones and puts them in his ears, taping them in place. He begs her to make it stop and she just tells him it's on a loop. They leave it playing and leave the room.
Kayla hears a car outside and looks out to see Leah running up to the door.
Kayla runs outside and climbs into Pete's car. She asks him what's going on. He says he didn't want Leah walking back in a blizzard, but she knows he's lying. He says he has to do something, but he can't tell her what it is. She asks if Danvers made him do something bad. He says he did it and he's fixing it. He needs her help. He says he needs to do this one thing and then he'll be there with her. She pulls him in for a kiss, then tells him to go, but to stay safe.
In the kitchen, Danvers snacks on Funyuns. Navarro opens the fridge and an orange rolls toward her. She tells Danvers that her mother used to love oranges. She'd peel them in one long strip. Julia was the same way. Danvers finds a shard of glass on the floor. She tosses it away. Navarro asks Danvers about Pete's future, but Danvers doesn't really know. People can survive a lot. She questions if Clark is ready.
They remove the tape from Clark's face and head. Navarro asks him he was there when Annie was murdered. He says he wasn't at first. He blames himself. Annie found some notes and started to piece together what they were doing. Danvers asks what that was. He says they were digging in the ice for the DNA of a microorganism that could save the world. Danvers knows that, but also knows it won't work. Clark says it did work. They could only do it because the pollution from the mine softened the permafrost. That allowed them to extract the DNA faster. Danvers says they were publishing fake reports of the mine pollution, but it's even worse, because he says they were encouraging them to produce more pollution. It was better for their work. It could have changed the world and it actually still could. Navarro asks if that was worth killing Annie. He says no. He didn't even know she was there. She sneaked in. He thinks she was trying to find paperwork to prove that the mine was paying them, but she discovered the truth and destroyed their work.
Annie tosses several samples on the ground and breaks them.
Clark wakes up to the sound of Annie screaming. He runs and enters the ice cave, where he finds Anders Lund stabbing Annie. He pulls Lund off Annie.
Clark says Lund caught her and snapped.
Clark tries to help Annie, but she hits him with something. The other scientists enter the cave. Annie starts swinging at them, but they tackle her. Clark watches as they kill her.
Navarro questions Clark's story that everyone helped kill Annie except for him. He says he would never hurt Annie.
As the other scientists watch, Clark takes off his shirt and presses it to Annie's face. He tells her he's sorry. Annie suddenly cries out and starts pushing at Clark. He grabs her hands and then uses his shirt to smother her.
When asked if he really didn't touch Annie, Clark says he loved her, but the project could have saved so many lives. Navarro reminds him that they stabbed Annie 32 times. He says it took two years to build a new robotic arm and hit a new vein down there. If they could finish the work, she wouldn't have died for nothing. He's surprised to learn her tongue was cut out. He says that wasn't them. They called the mine for help because the mine needed them. They sent a cop to move the body and he must have cut out the tongue. Navarro stares at Clark and challenges him to tell her again that he loved Annie. He says he did. Navarro pulls out her gun and Danvers leaves the room. Navarro is surprised that Danvers isn't trying to stop her. Clark begs for his life.
Danvers and Navarro enter the Wheeler house. They see William Wheeler sitting in a chair, looking at his girlfriend's body. He whistles "Twist and Shout."
Navarro joins Danvers in the hallway. Danvers says she was about to do it herself. Navarro asks if she means she was about to kill Clark, but Danvers means Wheeler.
Navarro shoots Wheeler in the head. They hear a baby crying in another room.
Danvers says she needs a break and walks down the hallway.
Danvers tries to peel an orange in one long peel. When she bends to pick up a fallen orange, she notices something on the floor that she didn't see before. Navarro startles her and she hits her head. The lines are still down, so they're still stuck. It's been a long night. Navarro reminds her they have a job to finish. Danvers grabs a bottle of vodka and a glass. Navarro looks at the peel Danvers left behind, shaped like a spiral.
Danvers asks Clark what happened to the other scientists. He says it was Annie. She killed them. Navarro asks what he meant. He says he kept seeing her and hearing her voice. He knew she'd come back. He knew she'd come for them.
Clark runs through the station. He enters the cave and closes the hatch behind him. Lund bangs on it, but Clark refuses to open it. He hears Lund screaming and then stopping. He hears some creaking, then it stops. He hears whispers and then his light goes out.
Clark says he held the hatch for an hour or a week. Danvers notes that it was right under their feet the whole time they were searching. Danvers asks again what happened to the scientists and he repeats that Annie killed them. She asks if he saw it happen. He says he was too afraid to leave the cave. But he did finally come up. The supply guy saw him. He says he was hungry. Danvers knows he found Otis Heiss. He says he wanted to know how to survive Annie. Danvers says Heiss didn't survive Annie, who wasn't even born yet when he was injured. Clark says Annie's been hiding in the caves forever. Time if a flat circle and they're all stuck in it. Danvers tells Navarro not to let Clark sleep and he'll talk. They have all night. Clark tells Navarro he's so tired and begs Navarro to kill him or let him kill himself.
Danvers tries to sleep in a bunk. She feels something in her hair and pulls out a cross necklace. She tries to sleep again.
Pete moves the bodies.
Danvers and Holden play.
Danvers wakes up suddenly. She can see the frost from her breath. She tries a nearby switch, but the power is off. She gets up and calls out to Navarro. She finds the doors open and goes through them to find Navarro outside, standing by Clark, who is frozen solid. Danvers is angry.
Back inside, Danvers asks why Navarro let him go when she knew he was going to kill himself. She asks if Navarro cut the power, too, but she says she didn't. Danvers says Clark was the only witness they had. Now they're going to freeze a the station just like he did. Navarro thinks there must be an emergency generator somewhere.
Navarro tries to turn on the generator, but it doesn't work.
Danvers tries to restore power, bur her headlamp goes out. She hears a clatter and watches a hub cap roll by the doorway.
Navarro hears a voice calling her name. She turns and sees Clark. He starts shaking. He says, "She's awake." Then he disappears.
Rose is working on a gun when there's a knock at the door. She lets Pete in and asks why he's there. Pete says Navarro sent him and told him to tell Rose to take him to Julia. He has someone who is going to the same place. Rose thinks it's going to be one of those nights.
Danvers and Navarro huddle around a fire. Danvers regrets ever taking the case. She notices Navarro shivering and asks what's going on with her. Navarro says she hears a voice calling to her. She has something to tell Danvers. Navarro says there's more than just this. It can be a comfort. Julia wasn't wrong. Danvers says Julia gave up. She quit. Navarro says he doesn't really look like Danvers, but there's something in his eyes.
Holden taps Navarro on the shoulder.
Navarro tells Danvers she means Holden. She tries to tell Danvers something about him, but she tells Navarro to shut up. Danvers says Navarro doesn't know how Holden felt when he was trapped in that car. If he was scared. Danvers is angry at Navarro for trying to tell her about Holden. She says Navarro can follow the voices and go die outside, but she has to leave Danvers' kid out of it. She has no mercy left and she'll rip Navarro apart.
Leah tries to call Danvers and leaves a voicemail asking her to call Leah back. She asks Danvers not to die out there. Leah looks out at the blizzard.
Danvers shivers under a blanket. After a moment, she gets up and goes back to the fire, but Navarro is gone. She walks out into the blizzard and calls to Navarro.
Navarro walks ahead, but thinks she's in a desert. She holds out her hand and touches another. The voice tells her her name is Siginnaatchiaq, then the hand pulls away.
As Danvers walks after Navarro, she hears Holden calling to her. She sees him under the ice and starts banging on it. She breaks the ice and falls through into the water. She tries to swim up, but then stops. An arm reaches into the water and pulls her out. It's Navarro.
Navarro tries to warm Danvers up by the fire.
Danvers walks up to the crashed car.
Navarro tells Danvers to breathe.
Holden blows out his birthday candles.
Danvers takes some labored breaths. When she becomes alert again, she asks Navarro what Holden said. Navarro tells her Holden says he sees her. Navarro holds her while she cries.
Rose watches Pete break through the ice. She tells him when to stop.
Hank breaks through the ice.
Rose tells Pete to look away, but he wants to see. She asks if he really wants to see how she'll cut his father's body to let the air out of his lungs so he won't float. He turns away and she gets to work. Once she's done, she tells him he needs to put Hank in the water himself, to finish what he started. He drags Hank's body over and watches it sink. He sits down and Rose sits next to him. She knows he's thinking the worst part is done, but it isn't. What comes after, forever, is worse.
January 1. 15th Day of Night
Navarro tells Danvers the storm is over so they can leave now. She offers Danvers a drink to warm her up. They toast to a happy new year. Danvers reminds Navarro that she told her back then that she wanted to walk out and disappear. Danvers says if she decides to do that, to try to come back. Navarro agrees to try. Navarro says that the way Clark described holding the hatch and being alone in the dark, that's how she's felt for a long time. She's holding the hatch and terrified of the one trying to open it. She was wrong. Danvers realizes something and walks away.
Danvers finds a bottle of something. She closes the hatch and tells Navarro to get a UV light. She pours the bottle over the hatch. Navarro shines the UV light on it and they see a handprint that's missing some fingers.
Blair Hartman wipes her nose, revealing that she's missing part of her ring finger and pinky.
Blair Hartman does her laundry.
Navarro realizes they weren't asking the right question.
Danvers says the question isn't who killed Annie K, but who knows who killed her.
Danvers and Navarro take a Tsalal truck to see Beatrice Malee and Blair. They need to ask some questions pertaining to the deaths of the scientists. Bee asks who is asking. Danvers shows her badge and introduces herself. Navarro introduces herself using her Inupiaq name. It's the same as Bee's Aaka's. Navarro asks if she knows what it means and learns it means the return of the sun after the long darkness.
Inside, Bee tells them that the scientists killed Annie K. Navarro asks if she knew all along. She says no. For six years, they thought it was the mine, to shut her up along with everyone else. Danvers tries to get up when some other women enter the room, but Navarro pulls her back down. Bee continues that after six years, they understood.
Janice is mopping when the bucket spills. She watches water go between the tiles, revealing there's something there.
Janice enters the ice caves. She finds the weapon used to kill Annie. She takes pictures of the evidence she finds.
Danvers asks why they didn't report it. Bee says it wouldn't change anything. It's always the same story with the same ending. Nothing ever happens. So they told themselves a different story with a different ending. Navarro asks how the story goes.
The group of women enter Tsalal. They hold the men at gunpoint and force them out of hiding. Blair tries to open the hatch, but can't get it. The women force the men outside.
Navarro asks if they kill the men in their story. Bee says they did it to themselves, when they dug into Annie's home in the ice, when they killed her and her daughter in there.
The women force the scientists into the back of a truck.
The truck drives out and the women open the back and order the men out. Bee orders them to take their clothes off. They all strip down and kneel down when ordered to. Bee draws the symbol on Lund's forehead.
Bee says if Annie wanted them, she could take them.
The women neatly pile the men's clothes as they force them to run out onto the ice.
Bee says if she didn't take them, they'd be a little frozen, but they'd survive. But they didn't survive. Bee then says it's just a story. She stands and the other women all stand behind her. Bee asks Navarro what it'll be. Navarro says stories are stories. Danvers says they just came by to inform them that the forensics came by and concluded it was a freak weather event. The case is officially closed. She thought they'd want to know seeing as they were their employers. She wishes them a happy new year and leaves. Navarro asks Bee who left Annie's tongue at Tsalal in her story. Bee says that's not part of their story. She says she doesn't know what Navarro is talking about. Navarro leaves.
Outside, she joins Danvers.
May 12. 1st long day of the year.
Danvers is questioned on camera about Hank's disappearance. She says it's an on-going investigation. The body of a local vagrant, Otis Heiss, was found in the truck of Hank's car. The bullets in him matched Hank's gun. One of the agents says Danvers was the one who checked Heiss out of The Lighthouse. Danvers says she did because Heiss had some information about the whereabouts of Raymond Clark. Surveillance footage from The Lighthouse shows Hank watching her car. It's possible he followed them and approached Heiss after the separated. She guesses it was a deal gone bad and Heiss got shot, then Hank got in some kind of accident in the blizzard while disposing of the body. She's sure they'll find him come summer. They always do unless they don't. Pete brings Danvers a mug of coffee and she introduces him as Hank's son. Pete was out looking for them that night, in the storm, but she's sure they read that in the report. One of the agents asks if she finds it odd that Clark died the same way as the other Tsalal men. Danvers does find that odd, but some questions just don't have answers. The other agent asks what happened to Navarro. Danvers says some people come to Alaska to escape.
Danvers knocks on Navarro's door, then enters. Her place is abandoned. Her bed is bare except for a stuff polar bear sitting on it.
Qavvik is feeding his dogs when he sees his SpongeBob toothbrush nearby.
Danvers continues that sometimes people come to Alaska to find something and sometimes they find it.
Navarro walks into the wilderness in daylight.
Danvers picks up the bear and Navarro's phone. On it is a video of Clark. He starts to tell the truth about the pollution from the mine, which is 11 times higher than what is allowed.
Dominic Pitka hikes near the North Slope Borough, which has been closed.
An agent asks Danvers if she's seen the Clark video. She says everyone has seen it. They ask if she knows how leaked it. She says no and asks if it matters. The agent asks how she plans to deal with political unrest in Ennis. She says that's not her job. The town was there before the mine and the APF. Before Alaska was named Alaska. She's just going to show up and do her job every day, like she always does. She asks if they have anything else. They ask if she has any theories about what happened to Navarro.
Danvers and Leah drive together and laugh. Leah has her kakiniit.
Danvers says she doesn't think they'll find Navarro out on the ice.
Pete lies next to a sleeping Darwin.
Danvers enjoys the view.
The agent asks if the reports of Navarro sightings might be true. She says it's Ennis. No one ever really leaves.
Navarro joins Danvers on the porch and they look at each other.
