Summary[]
December 31.
14th Day of Night
Lou cremates Julia's body and puts her ashes in an urn, which she gives to Navarro, who thanks her for letting her stay close. Lou says it's okay, but not to tell anyone. Navarro signs the paperwork and hugs the urn to her chest.
Alma tells Danvers they have to limit their contact to ten minutes, because Heis is still in withdrawal.
Danvers questions Heiss about Clark. He says he knew about Tsalal, but he didn't know the scientists. Clark wanted to know how Heiss had survived his injuries. She asks him how he did and he asks her if it really looks like he did. He says he doesn't know where Clark is. She reminds him that he said Clark was going back to the Night Country. He doesn't know what he meant by that. He says Clark also said, "She's awake." a bunch of times. He said he had to hide because she was out there. Danvers asks what happened the day of his injures. He says it was 30 years ago and he doesn't know why it matters, but then he tells her there was a cave-in. Men died trapped in the ice. They went for help, but there was a blizzard. Something was screaming or howling. The other men followed the sound. Heiss tried to go after them and then there's nothing. He woke up in the hospital with horrific injuries. Danvers shows him a map of the cave system. He shows her where the entrance is, at the end of Bear Creek. He tells her she can't go alone because the caves collapse. The ice is like thin glass. She tells him he's going to take them there. He tells her he can't like he is, but she tells him he'll be better in a few days. He grabs her arm and tells her that's not what he meant. She can help him get well. She tells him she can't get him heroin. He tells her time's up and rolls over.
Navarro picks up Danvers, who tells her she found the entrance and asks if she's up for it. She says she is. Danvers sees Julia's urn buckled into the back seat and asks if Navarro wants to talk about it. Navarro says no and they set out.
Pete is in the kitchen when Kayla drops a bag near him, telling him it's his and not to come back tonight. He tries to talk to her, but she tells him just to go.
The cave is on Silver Sky property because they own the entire region. Navarro asks how Leah is and Danvers says she has a girlfriend. Navarro's had a bunch of those. Danvers thinks the girlfriend thing is okay, but she's become a crazy radical, splashing black paint everywhere. Navarro says they're not crazy. The water is poisoning people. Danvers knows that.
Leah spreads paint on her face, then does the same for Sheri. They look at themselves in a mirror, then join the other protesters.
Navarro and Danvers find the entrance, but it looks as though someone has blown it shut. Navarro is angry and goes back to the truck.
Pete takes his bag to his dad's house.
Hank is inside, playing guitar and singing, while Pete stands against the house and listens.
Leah and Sheri join a crowd of protesters outside Silver Sky. The miners exit.
The cops, including Navarro, drive to the protest.
Security tries to back up the crowd to allow the miners to pass. A fight breaks out.
Hank answers his phone. It's Pete, who tells him what happened with Kayla. He asks if he can crash with Hank. Hank says he can. Pete lies and says he's five minutes away.
Navarro navigates through the crowd, breaking up fights. She pauses when she sees Grace Oopik in the crowd, though Grace disappears when someone passes in front of her. Navarro sees Leah get grabbed by another cop, who then hits her. Leah calls out to Sheri, but Sheri disappears through the crowd, leaving Leah on her own. Navarro steps in, telling the cop that Leah's a kid. Navarro then starts punching the cop.
Danvers talks to Connelly about the protest. Kate McKitterick is angry and wants answers. Danvers says it's not even her jurisdiction. It's the troopers' job. Connelly says Kate wants her there as Chief of Police. Danvers gets a call from Navarro and tells Connelly she'll be there. He tells her he'll also be there, confusing her. She hangs up and takes the call from Navarro, who says she has bad news.
Leah waits in Navarro's car while Navarro talks to Danvers on the phone outside. Navarro gets back in the car and ignores Leah's question about Danvers to ask about Leah's head. Leah says she's stopped bleeding. Navarro asks what Leah was doing at the protest. Leah turns the question back on Navarro, wondering what side she's on. She understands Danvers being against them, but Navarro actually knows what's happening to the town. Leah asks Navarro to take her home, but Navarro says she's not going home. Danvers wants her to take Leah in. Leah is aggravated.
Danvers asks Pete if he knew Leah was going to the protest. He says he didn't. He's not even in the house because Kayla kicked him out. Danvers asks if he needs a place to stay, but moving in with her would put him on a fast track to a divorce, so he declines. He shows her a file, which he says is the thing she's been looking for. Leah comes in and calls for Danvers, but Danvers ignores her and has Pete do the same. Leah then calls for Officer Cooper to book her. Once they're gone, Pete explains that the LLC that paid for the grants that funded the station traced back to Tuttle United, which has ties to Silver Sky Mining. The mine was bankrolling Tsalal. Tsalal pushes out bogus pollution numbers for the mine. Danvers says she's sorry about Pete's divorce, but he says it's not a divorce.
Pete offers Leah a can of Pepsi through the slot in the door. She hates Pepsi, but the machine was out of Mountain Dew. He also passes in some chips and asks if she's okay. She says she is, so he asks about Sheri. Leah is angry with Sheri, but instead of telling him why, she changes the subject to him being kicked out. She says Pete's an asshole and Kayla couldn't stop crying. Leah tells him that Kayla told her about falling in love with Pete. She saw him play in a game he lost. He fell on his butt, Huey Larson scored, and everyone gave him crap for it, but he had a big smile on his face. Then Kayla found out that Huey's dad had had a stroke. Leah asks him if he fell on purpose. He denies it. Leah says Kayla misses that guy and advises him not to let Danvers ruin that guy.
Navarro asks if Danvers is really going to keep Leah in holding. Danvers says Leah doesn't understand how vulnerable she's making herself. Navarro says she's trying to do the right thing and she's young, but Danvers thinks she's doing it just to upset her. She doesn't like Navarro telling her how to handle her business because, especially since she got so many calls about Navarro hitting another trooper. Navarro says that trooper hit Leah. Danvers says he's been suspended. She notices how quiet Navarro is and asks if she's okay. She quickly deduces that she isn't. She asks where Danvers is going and learns she's going to meet Kate McKitterick and Connelly about the protests. She's kind of glad she's going because she has something to discuss with Kate and shows Navarro the paperwork from Pete.
Danvers arrives at Silver Sky. A receptionist offers her help, but she declines. She goes into the office, where Kate and Connelly are waiting. She blames the mess at the protest on the troopers. She tries to pivot the conversation, but they have something else to talk to her about.
Kate shows Danvers security footage from 9:15 AM, before the protest. It's Danvers and Navarro on Silver Sky property. She questions why they were there. Danvers says it's police business, to do with the Tsalal investigation. Kate asks what led them to that location. Danvers says there's an abandoned cave and they located an engineer with information about Raymond Clark. Kate says the good news is that it's not a murder case after all. Connelly gives Danvers a file and tells her the forensics came back and it was a weather event, a slab avalanche. Danvers doesn't believe it. Connelly says the theory is that they went outside to watch the last sunset before the long night. Danvers starts to ask about their injuries, but Connelly says they're common during a flash freeze. And fatal hypothermia causes hallucinations. Danvers asks if the official word is that they froze to death. Kate thinks it should be a relief that there's not a serial killer among them. Danvers says that's convenient given that the mine funds the station. Kate says they donate to a lot of worthy research causes. Danvers says the funding is for an independent outfit that proves their pollution numbers. It's a conflict of interest. Kate says she'll look into it, but she doesn't see how that has anything to do with the avalanche. Kate leaves and Danvers tells Connelly that the cave is where Annie Kowtok was killed. The cases are linked and they've almost figured it out. Connelly reminds Danvers of the William Wheeler case. He knows it wasn't actually a murder-suicide. Danvers denies knowing anything and Connelly tells her the Tsalal case is closed. She tells him a woman was murdered. He tells her to go home to her daughter.
Kate picks up Hank, who tells her kids shouldn't be getting married so young when she asks about Pete. Kate warns him that Danvers isn't going to let the case go. She's looking for the location of Annie's murder. She can't find that cave. Hank doesn't know what he can do about that. Kate says Otis Heiss could take Danvers there. Hank tells her to take it to Connelly, but Kate says he's weak and he's also sleeping with Danvers. Hank says he did something for her and she broke her promise. Kate reminds him that they paid him well. He says the money is gone and she promised him Chief of Police. Kate didn't know Danvers would be exiled there. It was a mess and she had no control. Now it's different. He says he's not a killer, but that's not what she said. She makes him repeat that she didn't ask him to kill anyone. She says Heiss is a drug addict and drug addicts get lost. She doesn't need to know the details. She says following Danvers will lead him right to Heiss. If he does it, the job is his. She's counting on him. Hank gets out of the car.
Navarro is doing her laundry when she finds a lock of hair in the washer and hears voices. When it slips out of her hands, she starts digging frantically for it. Kayla comes to her and asks if she's okay. She says she's fine and asks about Kayla's grandma. Kayla says Kalik's fine and she's just covering for her because she went to the dentist. Navarro asks Kayla if she's okay, but before she can answer, there's a knock on the window. It's Qavvik, telling Kenny that he found Navarro. Qavvik brings Navarro the missing stone. Kenny says his grandpa taught him to walk away when he saw those. People would leave them as a warning for hunters, to indicate places where the ice would swallow them whole, like underground ice caves. Kenny admits that as kids, they'd cracked the ice on purpose to go into the caves. His grandma was angry when she found out and said the night country would take them.
Navarro goes to Danvers and says she knows how to get them into the caves. They just have to find the highest point on the maps and crack in. Heiss can point it out to them and they can go. Davners tells Navarro it's over. The forensics came back on the Tsalal men. It was a freak weather event. Connelly is shutting them down. Navarro says they can forget about Tsalal. Annie's case is separate anyway. Danvers says he knows about William Wheeler. She doesn't know how, but he knows everything. Navarro doesn't care. She wants to find out where Annie died. Danvers asks if she thinks she'll find a signed confession on the wall. Navarro thinks there would be evidence there. Danvers tells Navarro to stop. It ends here. It's over. Navarro wants to go talk to Heiss and have him point out the spot on the map. Danvers says she can't because The Lighthouse won't let her in after what she did. She begs Navarro to let Annie go. Navarro says she can't and she knows that Danvers carries Annie now, like Navarro has all this time. She's leaving her alone, in the cave, in the dark. She tells Danvers Annie is hers now and leaves.
Navarro opens the cell door and gestures for Leah to come out. Leah asks if Danvers is letting her go. Navarro doesn't care. Leah gets up and walks out.
Leah looks at Danvers as she walks out.
Hank asks Pete what the drama between Leah and Danvers was. Pete says it's just family stuff. Hank shares a story of Pete falling through the ice when he was nine. Pete doesn't remember a lot of it, but Hank does. He wakes up dreaming of it sometimes. He was there and then he was gone. Hank had to run up ahead and break through with an ice axe. He kept going until he got through and pulled Pete out. On the way to the hospital, Hank kept Pete awake.
Rose breaks through the ice for Navarro. Rose offers to stay with her and then tells Navarro not to stay too long because the weather is turning. She dumps Julia's ashes into the water because Julia wanted to be in the ocean. As she stands, Navarro hears a voice calling her name and telling her to listen. The ice underneath her cracks and Rose tells her to lie down towards her. Rose crawls to Navarro and helps her get to safety. Once she's safe, Rose asks her why she was walking into the sea like that. Rose called her back, but Navarro didn't hear her.
Danvers goes to the Prior house. Kayla tells her Pete's not there, but she's looking for Leah. Kayla says Leah doesn't want to talk to her, but relents when Danvers says please.
Danvers knocks on the bathroom door and Leah asks what she wants. Danvers asks if she's just doing this to mess with her. Leah says not everything is about her. Danvers opens the door, and Leah recoils because she's in the bathtub. Danvers is upset to see bruises on Leah's body, but Leah tells her not to worry about it. Danvers says Leah could have been killed, but Leah tells her not to be dramatic. Danvers starts to tell Leah about the case. Leah knows about Annie K. Everything she fought against is still happening. There have been nine stillbirths in the last three months. Nine moms without their babies. Danvers asks Leah to come home for New Year's. Leah doesn't answer, so Danvers gets up. Leah calls out to her and says she hasn't given up on her.
Hank watches Denvers leave the Prior house and follows her.
Danvers goes to the cemetery, where the caretaker tells her it'll be three months before they can dig any new graves, so the bodies are stuck there until then. There are several baby-sized coffins in the room. Danvers pulls out the tag on one and sees that it's Noah S. Williams, who was stillborn on the 12th.
Danvers enters the evidence room and digs through a tub to find something. On her way out, she notices Hank following her and asks if he talked to Connelly. He doesn't answer, so she goes to Pete and has him bring his computer into her office.
Once they're in the office, she asks Pete who he talked to about Wheeler. He says no one, but Connelly knows, which means Hank knows. She asks what the password is for his computer. She guesses that it's Darwin's birthday. She's upset that he didn't heed her warning that his father only seems like an idiot. Danvers asks him what he thinks he knows about Wheeler. He doesn't answer, so she tells him to make up the questions. He just had to know, had to keep digging. That's what Hank found on his computer. Hank started asking Pete what they know about the mine. Pete says he wasn't digging for anything. Danvers tells Pete to ask her his questions. He doesn't want to, but she tells him to ask the questions he wanted answers to. He asks her how many times they visited Wheeler's house. Danvers doesn't know for sure, but guesses three. Pete tells her it was ten. He asks what the situation was on those visits. She says that's the wrong question and to ask again. He tries to ask a different question, but that's also the wrong question. And a third time. He asks if she knew Wheeler was left-handed. She says no. He shows her the pictures of his girlfriend's face, which indicate a right-handed attacker. Pete then pulls up her senior picture, which shows a birth mark over her left eyebrow. All the forensic pictures show it over her right, meaning someone flipped every single photo in her file. The bullet wound in Wheeler's head was on his right side. Everything else was destroyed in the flood. Danvers asks Pete to ask the real question. He asks if she and Navarro shot William Wheeler and make it look like a suicide. Danvers says with as smart as he is, he needs to learn when to stop asking questions. She tells him he can't stay at Hank's and gives him the key to the shack in the backyard of her house. They don't have to see each other. She tells him not to be stupid. Danvers passes Hank on her way out. Hank tries to talk to Pete, but Pete tells him to get away and recoils when Hank touches him.
Navarro comes to see Qavvik. She crawls into bed behind him and holds him.
Pete goes to Danvers' shack and settles in.
Danvers goes to see Heiss. Bob leads her to his room. Heiss flinches at the light. Danvers says he's coming with her. She got him what he wanted, so they can get him feeling better so he can guide them through the caves. He asks her to show him and she pulls out the heroin.
In the car, Heiss asks Danvers to give him the heroin. She says he can't get high in her truck in public. He tries to get out, but she says if he does, he'll go back to jail. He decides to stay. Danvers calls Navarro and tells her to meet at her place. They're going to the ice caves. She admits that she was wrong.
Navarro gets dressed and leaves. She's surprised that Qavvik doesn't try to stop her. He just tells her to come back. She kisses him and leaves.
Danvers points Heiss to the bathroom, but has him show her the entrance on the map first. He points out the highest point on the map, so she gives him the heroin. She tells him to take it easy and not make a mess.
Heiss gets high in the bathroom.
Navarro watches a mother and her children cross the street. The older child stops and turns to look at her, then points to her. The mother comes back and pulls the child out of the street with her.
Danvers hears a door slam and goes to the door, thinking it's Navarro. Instead, it's Hank. She asks what he's doing there and he tells her Connelly wants him to bring Heiss in. Danvers asks what he's talking about and he says there's an outstanding warrant out for Heiss. Danvers questions why Connelly didn't ask her himself. He doesn't know. Danvers asks how he knew Heiss was at her place. Hank is surprised to hear that. He just wanted her to point him in the right direction. Danvers goes to call Connelly, but Hank pulls out his gun and tells her to give Heiss to him. Heiss comes out to investigate and Hank says he's coming with him. Danvers tells him he isn't. She says she doesn't know what's going on, but Hank can just leave and everything can be okay. Hank pulls his gun on Heiss and Danvers tries to talk him down. Hank is insistent that he's taking Heiss and says he's doing things with Heiss like she did with Wheeler. Danvers doesn't know what they have on Hank, but promises they can fix it. Hank says they can't fix her turning his son against him. Danvers says Pete loves him. He doesn't want to see Hank doing anything like this. Heiss turns to leave and Hank shoots him. Hank points the gun at Danvers and tells her to back up, which she does. Then he goes over and shoots Heiss in the head. Pete comes in with his own gun raised and asks what's going on. Hank tells him to lower his gun, but he refuses. Danvers tells Pete to think. Hank tries to get Pete to help him while Danvers encourages him to think about what he's about to do. Pete holds his gun up to Hank. Hank says they should know something. He didn't kill Annie K. He just moved her body. He tells Pete to remember that blood is blood. Hank starts to raise his gun at Danvers, so Pete shoots him in the head. Then he crumples to the floor and Danvers holds him while he cries.
Navarro gets out of her car and walks up to Danvers' house.
Navarro, Danvers, and Pete look at the two bodies in the room. Danvers wants to call Connelly, but Navarro tells her not to. If she brings Connelly into it, Pete will go down for the shooting. Connelly is in on it, so he'll bury all of them. Navarro firmly states that this didn't happen. Hank was never there. She starts to gather things as she says Hank snatched Heiss and shot him, then had an accident trying to get rid of the body. His truck will be there, but he'll never be found. Danvers says this is too big for them to fix. Navarro reminds Danvers that Hank was sent there to stop them from finding out where Annie died. They are so close. The storm will cover their tracks, so they have to go immediately. Pete says Navarro's right. Danvers says they have to clean things up. Pete offers to clean up so they can go. Danvers doesn't want to leave Pete alone, but Pete says Navarro can't make it in the caves alone. Danvers doesn't want to make him clean up his dad's dead body, but Navarro just tells him to do a good job, then get the bodies to Rose and tell her she said to take him to Julia. She has him repeat her directions. Pete tells Danvers to go. Danvers follows Navarro out.
Navarro reads the map while Danvers drives.
