Danvers goes into Leah's room and gently pulls her hair back.
December 24. 7th Day of Night
Danvers talks to Pete, who says they're packing up the bodies to move them to Anchorage. Danvers says she'll be there right away, but Pete tells her Connelly is there to supervise. She says she'll be there in five minutes, but when she sees Julia walking on the side of the road stripping her clothes off, she tells Pete to have Navarro meet her at the police station instead. Danvers gets out of her truck and talks to Julia. She tries to wrap a coat around her, but Julia fights her. She finally gets the coat on her and tells her she's going to keep her safe.
Back at the station, Navarro talks to Julia, who is wrapped in a blanket. Denvers stands outside, out of view, and listens. Julia comes out of the room and apologizes to Danvers, who tells her it's okay. Navarro sends Julia to wait downstairs. Navarro thanks Danvers, who asks if Julia is going to be okay. Navarro ignores the question and asks if the bodies have been taken to Anchorage yet. Danvers says Pete is handling it and Connelly is supervising. Navarro is upset hearing that and says he better not be taking the case away from them. Danvers assures her that she's handling it and that Navarro should go be with her sister. Navarro says they also need to talk about the video.
Pete watches them load the bodies.
Navarro sits with Julia.
Pete tells Danvers he found reports of people with similar injuries to the scientists. She tells him to get them all together. Connelly then follows Danvers into her office and tells her Pete's going to be good, which she proclaims a miracle given his genetics. She asks him why he's there. He says he's going to stick around for a while, but promises he's not there to take her case away from her. There are protests at the mine, a shooting that ended in a fight at the hospital, six dead bodies in an ice rink, and a missing person of interest. She needs to get things under control. She thinks he just wants to use it to make himself look good while he runs for mayor. He says he's helping her and he knows she likes having him in town. She tells him to fuck off. Danvers tells him that the scientists died before being frozen. He asks how she knows and she tells him she did an independent pre-forensic evaluation. He doesn't want to know what that means. She's treating it like a murder case and asks if he watched the video she sent him. He says they're keeping that on a need-to-know basis.
At The Lighthouse, Navarro helps Julia get checked in with Alma, the receptionist. Navarro promises it won't be like the other places. She's in town and she'll visit every day. Julia says she's good. Navarro says she'll be back for Christmas and she'll bring presents. Julia says she can do this. They hug and Julia says she's sorry. Navarro tells her she's perfect. Alma comes back to take Julia.
Pete shows Danvers the file of Otis Heiss, who was admitted to St. Joseph's in April 1998 with burns on both corneas, ruptured eardrums, and self-inflicted bites. He was from Germany and had no records of employment, bank accounts, or credit card numbers. His social security has been inactive since November 2006 and he's had no registered address for eight years. He also has a history of disorderly conduct. He's been in and out of rehab. He was picked up be a trooper two months ago, but no one has seen him since. He's struggled with drug abuse since his accident and they don't know what caused his accident. Danvers says to send people out to look for Heiss. He reminds her that they're already looking for Clark and they don't have anyone left. Danvers asks about Hank, but Hank is at the airport, picking up his fiancée. She tells him to have them start looking for both men. Maybe they're in the same place. Pete says he'll have to put out an APB and reminds her it's Christmas Eve. She tells him to get on it.
Navarro tells Danvers over the phone that there are no ice caves in the area. Danvers is frustrated that Hank has put the creamer on a shelf she can't reach. She gets Officer Cooper to get it down for her. Denvers says that means Annie was killed in one place and then they dumped her body in town to send a message. They wonder if the bones in the walls in the video are fossils. Danvers asks about Julia and Navarro says she's at The Lighthouse and Navarro is watching from outside. Danvers tells her she should go home because it's Christmas Eve. When Navarro curses Christmas Eve, Danvers says she has an idea.
Hank waits at the airport with a stuffed rabbit. A few passengers get off a plane and enter the airport. He watches as a woman stands in the doorway and smiles, but frowns when a worker closes the door with her inside the airplane.
Danvers asks how bad it is with Julia, but Navarro really doesn't know. She says Julia prays a lot and she's not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Danvers says that when she mom died, her dad told them to pray. He told them if they prayed with their hearts, she'd be okay. So Danvers prayed hard, day and night. She bruised her knees so badly that she couldn't walk at the funeral.
Navarro and Danvers go to Bryce's house. Danvers tells Navarro to stand in front of her. When Becks Bryce answers the door, Navarro asks if they can speak to her husband. When Becks sees Danvers, she leaves, goes into another room, and shuts the door. Navarro realizes Danvers slept with her husband. After a minute, Bryce comes to the door and tells her she can't be serious. Denver says they just need five minutes, but he's angry with her for coming to his home. Navarro shows him Annie's video and says they need his help.
Bryce looks at the bones in the video and says they're whale bones. Navarro asks how they find the cave as there are no ice caves in the region. He corrects that there actually are. There's a whole ice cave system bordering the Brooks Range, but it's a death trap. There were a bunch of accidents years ago, so it was closed. He can pull the maps, but it's going to take some time. Even with the maps, they'd need an expert to guide them. One wrong step could kill them. Navarro says they need to go there. Bryce says they could track down whoever mapped the cave system. He checks and sees that it was Otis Heiss. Danvers explains how she knows the name. Becks comes in and Bryce tells them they need to go. Danvers takes the computer and asks if he'll get them the maps. He says he will.
At The Lighthouse, Julia is sitting on the edge of her bed when an orange rolls between her feet. She looks under the bed and sees Mrs Navarro, who screams, startling Julia.
Hank enters the police station, pulls a bottle of liquor out of his desk, and pours himself a glass. Pete sees this and clears his throat. When Hank asks, Pete explains that he's putting out an APB. Hank knows Kayla's going to be mad that Pete isn't home. Pete asks about Alina and Hank says she wasn't on the plane. He tries to justify it, saying something must have happened. Pete asks if he sent Alina money. Hank doesn't answer and just says now that he's free, he can go to Pete's for Christmas Eve. Pete says that sounds nice. He just needs to finish up and talk to Kayla.
Navarro goes to see Rose, who is dressed up. She came by to wish Rose a Merry Christmas and is surprised by the feast Rose has prepared. Navarro asks about Rose's life before Alaska. She knows Rose Aguineau isn't her real name. Rose says she was a very serious professor in a very serious school writing very serious ideas. She left because one morning, she sat down to polish an article and she realized she'd had enough. It's quieter in the Alaska mostly.
Kate McKitterick calls Danvers and tells her she needs to come to the mine offices immediately.
Danvers arrives to find MURDERERS spray painted across the doors. She tells Kate that that's unacceptable. Kate wants to know what Danvers plans to do about it. Danvers says she's going to go home and call some guys to clean it up before her employees get back. Kate wants to press charges, but Danvers tells her no. She doesn't get to mess up Leah's life because she's mad at Danvers. Danvers reminds her that it's Christmas. Kate gestures at her security guard, who has Leah in his truck. He lets her out and she argues with Danvers, whom she believes always takes the miners' side over hers.
Navarro calls Julia and asks how her room is. Julia, who is outside, lies and says it's okay. It's quiet. Navarro tells her to get some rest and she'll see her tomorrow morning. Julia takes off her clothes and stacks them neatly, then walks out into the sea.
Danvers is upset when Leahs comes downstairs with clothes and asks where she's going to spend the night. Leah says she's not going to make Danvers pretend anymore. Danvers finally tells her to go to the Priors. She watches as Leah gets in the car with Kayla. Danvers goes back inside and sees the uncooked turkey on the table. She throws it in the trash.
Danvers watches Annie's video and drinks.
Navarro comes home and finds a gift. It's SpongeBob toothpaste.
Danvers watches the video again and notices something at the end of it, a zapping noise. She backs it up and listens again, then compares it to the end of Molina's video. She calls Navarro and tells her someone cut the power in Molina's video and it's the same in Annie's. Navarro wonders why there would be power in the ice cave, which Danvers says is the right question. Someone must have put a generator there. It could have been Tagaq. He had access and he was hostile when they went to see him. She wants to come pick up Navarro, but Navarro reminds her she's been drinking. Danvers says Navarro can pick her up instead, but Navarro doesn't want to go confront someone when her backup is drunk. Danvers then proposes having Pete come pick her up. Navarro tells her to give Pete a break because it's Christmas Eve, but Danvers is adamant that Pete will pick her up in ten minutes.
Pete and Hank are preparing to leave the police station when Danvers calls. Pete tells her he got the APB squared away, but she tells him he needs to pick up Navarro and go to the nomad camps with her. She wouldn't ask if she didn't really need him, which he knows.
Leah watches Kalik and Kayla cook together. They show Leah how to knead the dough. Kayla steps away to take a call from Pete.
Pete picks up Navarro, who apologizes to him. Pete knows Danvers was drunk. They laugh about it and question why they're even doing this. Navarro knows Danvers is onto something. They arrive at the camp.
Navarro knows on Tagaq's door, but there's no answer. She cracks the door and calls out his name. They find evidence he hasn't been there in a while. The spiral symbol is drawn on a piece of cardboard on the floor. On it is a stone with the same symbol. They hear barking.
Outside, Dominic Pitka tells them they need an order to go into Tagaq's house. Navarro asks when Tagaq left and Pitka tells them he left the day after their last visit. Navarro shows him the symbol and asks if he knows what it is. He doesn't answer.
Danvers pores over the documents. She gets frustrated and swipes them, then grabs her keys.
Connelly is watching a movie and whitening his teeth when there's a knock on the door. He opens the door to find Danvers, who starts kissing him. She grimaces and then pulls back and enters his room. He rinses his mouth in the bathroom and goes back to Danvers. He asks if she's drunk and if she drove there. She tells him not to judge her. She finds his teeth whitener and asks if it's for his campaign posters. She know he can't send her to somewhere worse than Ennis, so she's not worried. He says he sent her there to help her, but she thinks he really sent her because she would have taken his job. He admits that she's a better cop than he is, but she's terrible with people. After Jake and Holden, it got worse. She doesn't believe that, but he says no one wants to work with her because she's still a mess. It's Christmas Eve and she's there with him. She goes to leave. He tries to stop her, telling her not to drive, but she pushes him off and leaves.
Hank eats dinner and watches Elf. He goes through his night, seeing all the things he set up for Alina.
Navarro gets a call from the Alaska Coast Guard with bad news. Pete asks if everything's okay and she tells him it is and tells him to go be with his family.
Pete goes home and gets into bed with Kayla. He tells her he's sorry, but she knows he isn't. He asks what she wants him to do and she tells him to let her sleep. He wonders why she won't just tell him that he ruined her life and she didn't want to have the baby.
Navarro is driving. She passes Ace, who gives her the finger.
Navarro goes to The Lighthouse and asks Bob why he let Julia leave. He tells her she can't come in after hours. She says she checked her sister in earlier today and he let her walk out the door. She realizes Bob didn't even know she was gone. He tells her it's a voluntary facility, not a detention center. She says it's a terrible facility because they just let people die. She kicks some things around and leaves.
Navarro goes back to Ace and punches him. His friends pull her off, but she breaks free and hits him again. His friends grab her and hold her while Ace hits her then starts kicking her when she falls to the ground.
Danvers is driving when she sees a polar bear in the road and swerves into a snow bank to avoid hitting it. The polar bear looks at her through her window, then leaves.
Qavvik wakes up when he hears someone in Qavvik's making noise. He comes downstairs with a gun. He's shocked to see it's Navarro and that she's been beaten. He asks her what happened and she tells him it's nothing and he should see the other guys. He helps her into a chair and sees that she lost a tooth. He starts trying to clean her up. He sees the rock and asks her about it. She doesn't know anything except that Tagaq left it for them. She asks him why he's alone in life and he says he isn't. She knows he is. So is she. So are Danvers and Rose. Qavvik tells her she's not alone. He starts to proposition a real relationship, but uses the distraction to fix her finger. She starts screaming and he holds her.
December 25th. 8th Day of Night
Danvers plays with Holden.
Danvers wakes to the sound of her doorbell. It's Navarro. Danvers sees her face and asks what happened, but Navarro turns the question back on her. She tells Danvers that Tagaq was gone when they got there and he left a rock, which Navarro has lost. She had a rough night. Danvers moves things so Navarro can sit, but the bottom of the box gives out, spilling it onto the floor. Navarro picks up Holden's polar bear and flashes back to seeing him. She tries to ask Danvers about it, but Danvers just tells her not to because dead people are dead. There's no heaven or hell or ghosts. There's nothing. Navarro asks her why she keeps the polar bear around if that's true. Danvers opens the door and throws it out into the snow. She says there's nothing there but them. The dead are gone. Navarro tells her that Julia killed herself last night by walking out into the sea. She just kept going until she drowned. Danvers says she's sorry. Navarro says Julia's dead body is coming today. They diagnosed her with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder. But those weren't her real problems. It takes them one by one. Danvers tells her she's an intelligent woman and doesn't have to believe stuff like that. Navarro says she failed her sister. It's a curse. It took their mother and her sister and now it's calling to her. Danvers tells her she's doing the thing she did with Wheeler, where she's seeing something. She saw something in that room. Navarro denies it, but Danvers knows because she was there.
Navarro sees the ghost of Wheeler's girlfriend standing over her body.
Navarro still denies seeing anything. Danvers knows she's lying. Navarro leaves when Danvers gets a call. It's Pete, saying some fishermen found something near the dredge. He sends her a picture.
Navarro goes to leave, but Danvers stops her and presses her phone against Navarro's window, showing her the picture Pete sent. It's a man who appears to be wearing Clark's coat.
They already checked the dredges and Clark wasn't there, so Navarro thinks he must have been moving around. The dredges are a good place to hide. Navarro remembers watching them when they were still working, when she was little. They were amazing. Then they got abandoned and now they're out there rotting.
They explore the dredges. They find the spiral symbol on the wall and hear someone running. They call out to Clark and tell him to stop. They start chasing him, but Navarro stops when she hears someone say her name. She looks down and sees Julia's body floating in the water. She follows wet footprints as Danvers follows Clark. She corners him and he lowers his hood to reveal it's not Clark at all, but Otis Heiss. He crumbles to the ground and tells her to leave him alone. She asks him who gave him the coat and asks if it was Clark. Otis doesn't answer.
Navarro continues following the footprints. They lead to a Christmas Tree. Navarro turns and startles when she sees Julia screaming.
Danvers asks where Clark is. Otis says he's gone, that he went back down to hide.
Danvers finds Navarro sitting in front of the tree.
Otis says Clark is hiding in the night country. They're all in the night country now.
Danvers sees that Navarro's eardrums are bleeding.
