Summary[]

April 22. 7 Years Ago

Navarro arrives at her location. She knocks on the door and hears a scream. She draws her weapon and knocks again. When she gets no response, she enters. She follows the noise to a room, where she finds Annie Kowtok, whom she places under arrest for trespassing and destruction of private property at the Silver Sky Mining facility. Annie says she needs a minute and there's another scream. Annie says the woman is ten centimeters dilated and having contractions every two minutes. Annie needs to get the baby out. They're the last birthing center in the region. Navarro follows Annie to Grace Oopik, who is giving birth in a pool surrounded by doulas. Grace is upset to see Navarro, but Annie says Navarro will be helping. She orders her to bring some hot water. Navarro adds hot water to the pool. Grace pushes and gives birth to her baby. The baby doesn't cry, so they take her over to a table and tell Grace sometimes it takes a few minutes. The doulas reassure Grace as she starts to worry about her baby not crying. Annie starts CPR on the baby and after a few minutes, she starts to cry, to everyone's relief. Annie hands the baby to Grace. Annie has the doulas take over and holds out her hands so Navarro can arrest her.

December 22. 5th Day of Night

Navarro is waiting with Hank and some other cops. Some hunters arrive, irritating Navarro, who considers them a liability. Hank says he'll take all the help he can get. Hank tells everyone they're looking for Raymond Clark, whom they consider armed and dangerous. He has a 48-hour head start on them. He has them break into search groups to spread out. Agents Cooper and Lee are in charge of sweeping the tundra. Trooper Davis is inspecting the mining dredges. He sends them out to start searching. Navarro reminds Hank that they want Clark alive, but Hank isn't sure that they do.

Danvers can't get Hank on the radio and tells Pete that Hank is recruiting civilians. She calls for Lulu to get a trooper on the phone to tell Hank to answer his radio. Pete says the forensic technician is coming on the evening charter and Lund is still in his coma. They had to amputate both of his legs and he might lose his left forearm. They also have all the things from Clark's trailer. Danvers wants it moved out of the evidence room into someplace sanitary. They have nineteen boxes. Danvers tells Pete to call Navarro and then her trooper command to request a transfer for her, temporarily. She still hates Navarro, as she does with everyone else, including him. She gives him Annie's cell phone to unlock. He asks her what happened on the last case she worked with Navarro, the Wheeler case. Danvers shuts the door and tells Pete it was a murder-suicide. William Wheeler was a bad guy with a long criminal history. The last time he came out, he started seeing an 18 year old girl. He beat her and sent her to the hospital twice, but she wouldn't report him. There was nothing they could do. Then they got a call.

Navarro and Davners enter Wheeler's place. They find the woman dead and Wheeler sitting in a chair looking at her. He whistles "Twist and Shout" and smiles at them.

Danvers says they were both dead when they got there. Navarro couldn't get over it. She was convinced they should have done more. She blamed Danvers and it got nasty. She transferred to the troopers. She sends Pete to get Navarro and tell Hank to get rid of his friends or she'll call Immigration on his mail-order bride.

Navarro searches in the wilderness. She throws out the orange she had and then finds it back at her feet while a voice says, "Help us." She gets a call from Lulu.

Danvers and Navarro look at the evidence and then get started going through it. As they look at everything, Danvers wonders what they're missing. She sees a picture and thinks it must be from the spring of 2016 and they must have started their relationship before that because Annie is wearing an Ariana Grande shirt. Leah played it all the time. She also looks in photos to track the fading of the blue stripes in Annie's hair. She and Clark were happy together. But their relationship was completely secret. Danvers asks Navarro to ask the question. Reluctantly, Navarro questions why they kept it a secret. Danvers asks if Navarro is still having sex with Qavvik. Navarro starts to fire back about Danvers and Connelly, but Pete comes in, so she tames it down. Once he's done, Danvers says no one there knows about her and Connelly. Navarro laughs and says everyone knows. But no one knew about Clark and Annie. Danvers finds a candid photo of them, amongst the dozens that are selfies or timed. Someone was with them that day. They start searching for more pictures like that one. One of them is stained with blue hair dye.

Danvers and Navarro enter a hair salon and greet Susan Ineak, who is dying someone's hair. Navarro looks for the color Susan used on Annie's hair. It's electric blue and it matches the dye on the picture. She lied to Navarro.

Susan admits to knowing Clark, but not telling them because Annie being stabbed sent a pretty clear message. While they talk, Susan's daughter comes in and puts her head in Susan's lap. Danvers offers to make macaroni and cheese and distracts the daughter by asking about the unicorn on her shirt. Once they're gone, Navarro tells Susan to start talking. She says she went to Tsalal to give them men haircuts. Annie went with her once. Annie wouldn't take no for an answer. She and Clark hit it off. They talked all night and he was obsessed with Annie's tattoo. Navarro shows her a picture of the spiral and Susan confirms that's the one. She says Annie dreamt it a bunch of times when they were in high school. The dreams stopped when she got the tattoo.

Danvers tells Susan's daughter about the unicorn as they make macaroni and cheese. Miriam interjects to say she loves skating.

Susan thought Annie and Clark would only have a one-night thing, but they hung out all the time. Clark was never violent. He was weird, but he was crazy about Annie. But Annie changed while they were dating. She wanted to keep the relationship secret, which was weird for her. Navarro says she would have protected Susan if Susan had told her about the relationship when Annie died. Susan was scared and she was seeing a guy from Tsalal herself, Oliver Tagaq. Danvers says no one by that name works there, but he was their equipment engineer. He left right before Annie died. Last Susan heard, he was somewhere out on the ice. She doesn't think he wants to be found. After they found Annie, Susan called the police, but she didn't leave her name because she didn't want to talk to Navarro. But she did tell them about Clark. Navarro asks who she talked to.

Danvers asks Pete where Hank is and learns he's still out searching for Clark. Navarro knows he's hiding because he has radio signal. Danvers tells Pete to try to find Tagaq. Navarro is angry with Hank for hiding Clark from her and taking her off Annie's case. She knows he did it to protect the mine. Danvers says without the mine, there is no town, since half the population works there. That means half the people in Ennis have a reason to silence Annie. And that doesn't explain Clark and Tsalal. Or Annie's tongue ending up at Tsalal. Danvers is sure there's a real explanation for all of it. Danvers thinks they're just not asking the right questions. Danvers phone chimes with a notification from Tinder. Navarro is shocked that she's on Tinder and wonders who on Ennis is even on there. Danvers says she set her radius for Fairbanks. She'll take trips. She says she doesn't fuck where she eats, but Navarro knows that's not true. Danvers asks Navarro what she does when she's lonely. Navarro says she prays, which makes Danvers laugh. She doesn't talk to God, though. She listens. Navarro sometimes feels like she wants to disappear.

At the ice rink, Pete tells Hank that Danvers want him to call, but Hank says she can wait. Hank found Pete's old skates while cleaning out the garage. He knows Darwin's only four, but Pete was already skating by that age. Pete accepts the skates and tells Hank that Danvers is going through the evidence from the trailer. Hank wonders what Danvers and Navarro are going to together. Pete wants to know what happened between them since Danvers won't tell him, but Hank doesn't know either. Navarro comes in and confronts Hank about Susan's call and asks why he didn't tell her about Annie and Clark. Hank says Annie was sleeping with half of Ennis. When Navarro continues to go at him, Danvers breaks it up and sends Hank back to the search, telling him to get rid of his friends or he'll get a negligence report for mishandling Annie's case. Hank says maybe he should file a report on her and implies that she's been inappropriate with Pete. She throws her drink in his face and tells him to do his job. Navarro's mad that Danvers didn't go harder on him and leaves. Pete says the weather has delayed the forensic tech, which is no good because the bodies will be thawed and then Conelly will send them to Anchorage. Pete has an idea. He has a cousin in White Lake who is a vet. He works with large animals. Pete can call him and see how quickly he can get there.

Navarro goes to see Qavvik, who shushes her when she yells for him.

Qavvik is ice fishing and asks what he can do for Navarro. Navarro asks him about Oliver Tagaq, but Qavvik doesn't know him. Navarro is sure he knows someone who does know him, since home brewing comes with a network. He agrees to ask around for a price. He wants her to tell him something in exchange for the information, something about herself. Navarro leaves without telling him anything.

Navarro starts to walk away, but then goes back and asks him what he wants to know. He asks about her mother. She tells him to ask Julia, but he's asking her. She was a local, from a gold mining camp that's gone. She left when she was fifteen, met Navarro's dad in Boston, and got pregnant. Qavvik realizes that's her accent. But Navarro didn't stay in Boston. She says her dad drank and hit her mom and them. So their mom took them and ran. Then they came back North. Qavvik says Alaska girls always come back. Their mom was not okay, like Julia. She heard voices and had episodes. One day, she left and never came back. She was killed and the murderer was never found. Qavvik says he's sorry. She never told Navarro her Inupiaq name. Now she needs Qavvik to get her the information she asked for.

Sheri waits for Leah and hugs her when she arrives. They enter a meeting of people who are against the mine, saying it's destroying the town. They were there before the mine and they want to be there after it's gone. A girl in the crowd recognizes Leah as Danvers' daughter. Leah corrects that Danvers is her stepmom. The girl assures her that everyone who cares is welcome at the meeting. Leah joins the chanting. Then the hunter on stage quiets the crowd and tells them Aviaq and Joe Carter's baby boy died that morning, stillborn. They have a minute of silence.

Danvers looks over evidence. She looks over at a dressed chicken.

She puts the wrapped chicken in the fridge. She hears music distantly, then hears the door open and steps on the stairs. She calls out for Leah, but gets no response.

Danvers opens Leah's door and finds her changing her shirt. She sees Leah's coat and asks if she's been hanging out with the people vandalizing the mine. Leah says she's not insane. She just cares about Ennis and wants Danvers to care. Danvers says she does care, but Leah doesn't believe her. Danvers wants her to clean her face, but Leah pulls back and tells her about the Carter baby being stillborn. Danvers drags Leah to the bathroom and orders her to clean off the kakiniit. Leah starts to clean it with a wipe.

Danvers looks at a picture of Annie in which she has the same kakiniit.

Navarro hears "Twist and Shout" as she walks in the wilderness. She hears a child giggling and tries to run to him, but falls and hits her head.

Navarro wakes up in a desert. A voice tells her to listen. She sees Holden, who tells her to tell his mommy something.

Navarro wakes up on the ice. She gets a call from Kenny Hogan, who is covering for Qavvik. She's calling about Julia. She started screaming that someone was coming, then she started praying. It was bad. Kenny thought she'd like to know. Julia ran out, so Kenny doesn't know where she is.

Navarro finds Julia and wraps her in a blanket. Julia is plagued by bad thoughts.

Pete takes off his uniform and gets into bed with Kayla, who is sleeping. He wakes her when he accidentally knocks a lamp off the bedside table. They hear Darwin calling for her.

Pete tries to soothe Darwin to sleep.

Pete apologizes to Kayla and asks her to come back to bed, but she has an exam at seven, so she might as well stay up. He asks her if he's in trouble. She just looks at him and he defends that it's just once case and it'll be over at some point. Kayla knows Danvers will still keep calling day and night and he'll run to her every time. Pete reminds her that she married a cop, but she says she didn't. He wasn't a cop, just a sweet idiot who made her laugh. That's not what Pete wants to be. He doesn't tell Kayla she can't be a doctor. She tells him she's in nursing school with a kid and married to a cop. Pete's phone rings.

Pete gets his phone and sees a missed call from Danvers and a text asking if he found Tagaq.

Navarro tucks Julia in on the couch.

Danvers lies awake.

December 23. 6th Day of Night.

Danvers enters a room where several women, including Janice and Kalik, are memorializing Aviaq Carter's lost baby.

In the bathroom, Danvers looks at herself in the mirror. She goes to wash her hands, but the water is contaminated.

Pete has Vince, the vet, look at the thawing bodies. He asks Vince if he thinks they could have clawed their own eyes out. Danvers comes in and asks if Pete got Annie's phone unlocked. Pete introduces Vince to Danvers and Vince tells her he thinks they died before they were frozen. He's seen plenty of frozen animals. The cold makes their heart rates drop and their breathing becomes shallow. They fall asleep and it's peaceful. The way they died isn't how you die in the cold. He won't know what killed them without a chance to do a proper postmortem exam, but it looks like cardiac arrest. He's seen caribou die of fright. It looks like the scientists. Danvers asks if he can do a little postmortem exam, but then acknowledges that would be illegal. Now they have to wait to see what Anchorage will share with them. She asks about Annie's phone again. Pete says they should get it back this morning. Navarro comes in and tells them she found Tagaq through the Mukluk Telegraph. Pete couldn't find any evidence that he ever existed. No identity documents came up. Navarro says he's living in a nomad camp on the North Shore.

Navarro and Danvers arrive at the nomad camp and say they're looking for Oliver Tagaq. Dominic Pitka asks them why. Danvers tells them about Tsalal and Navarro emphasizes that Tagaq is not a suspect. They just need to talk to him. Pitka's not sure he's around, but points to a door. They knock on the door and call out to Tagaq, but get no answer. However, they can hear his generator, so they know he's there. Danvers then opens the door. Oliver Tagaq is sitting with a gun on his lap and tells her she's standing on traditional Inupiaq territory. He threatens to shoot her if she takes one more step. Danvers questions if the state property records will have the land documented as his. He asks if she wants to come see the deed. He sees Navarro and asks her for her name. When she says Evangeline Navarro, he asks her in Inupiaq who she is. She says she already told him. They're there to talk about Annie, but he doesn't care unless they have an arrest order. Danvers says they could get one for the deaths of the scientists. They tell him his former colleagues are dead. They died a week ago. He asks how. Navarro says they still don't know what happened. He asks specifically about Lund and Navarro says he's in the hospital, but not doing well. She asks if there's anything he knows. He orders them to get out of his house and pulls his gun on them. He tells them never to come back.

As they leave, Danvers asks Navarro what Tagaq was asking about when he asked her name, but Navarro says she wouldn't understand. Lulu radios Danvers and says the hospital called about Lund. Navarro turns on her lights and siren as they drive.

Ivy explains that the gangrene spread, so Lund needed multiple amputations. He lost his eyesight. He's been in and out and he's agitated. She warns them to prepare themselves. They enter the room, where Lund is wailing. Both legs and his right arm have been amputated. Danvers introduces herself and asks what happened on the ice. After a moment, he says they woke her. And now she's out there in the ice. Danvers asks who he means. Lund says she came for them in the dark. Ivy steps in to sedate him. Danvers asks again who came for him, but then someone tells her there's been an accident on the search and they need her help. She leaves Navarro with Lund and goes to see about the hunters fighting.

Danvers tries to break up the fights and starts cuffing people.

Lund sits up in his bed as Navarro stands in the doorway looking away. He says hello to her and she goes into the room. He tells her her mother says hello and she's waiting for her. He points at her and then starts convulsing. The nurses race in and start trying to resuscitate him as Danvers returns. Lund flatlines.

Pete tells Danvers he cracked Annie's phone. He shows her a video of Annie, saying she found something. She starts to explain, but then there's a noise and she disappears with a scream.
