Otis Heiss is an engineer who mapped the ice caves.

History[]

Otis was admitted to St. Joseph's in April 1998 with burns on both corneas, ruptured eardrums, and self-inflicted bites. He had a history of disorderly conduct and had been in and out of rehab. He also had no record of employment, bank accounts, or credit card numbers in Alaska and his social security had been inactive since November 2006. After eight years with no registered address, Danvers found him living in the dredges, wearing a coat that had belonged to Raymond Clark. He said that Clark had gone back to hide and was living in the night country, as they all were.[1]

Danvers took Heiss to The Lighthouse. While he was in withdrawal, Danvers came to question him. He insisted he didn't know where Clark was and didn't know what he meant by the night country. He relayed the story of his original hospitalization. There was a cave-in and several men died trapped in the ice. They tried to get help, but there was a blizzard. They heard screaming and some of the men followed the sound. Heiss tried to follow and that's the last thing he remembers before waking up in the hospital. Danvers showed him a map of the caves and he warned her not to go alone because the caves would collapse. Then he tried to get her to get him heroin in exchange for helping her. She refused, so he stopped answering her questions.

Danvers later came back and showed him she'd gotten him heroin and said he was going to come with her. They went back to her house and Danvers gave him the heroin after he showed her on the map how to get into the caves. While he was using the heroin, Hank came to Danvers' home. He pulled out his gun and told Danvers that Heiss was going to come with him. Danvers tried to talk him down, but when Heiss moved to leave, Hank shot him. Heiss fell to the ground. Danvers tried to help him, but Hank pointed his gun at her, so she backed off and then Hank went to Heiss and shot him in the head, killing him.[2]
