Harris James is a recurring character in Season 3 of True Detective played by Scott Shepherd.
History[]
After years as a Patrolman in the Arkansas State Troopers, he comes across a devastating car accident which happens to be an attempted suicide by Isabel Hoyt. Patrolman James then picks her up and helps the Hoyt family cover up the incident. Years later Patrolman James is part of the initial investigation into the shootout at Brett Woodard's home that found evidence he was responsible for the disappearance of Will and Julie Purcell. He later becomes Chief of Security at Hoyt Foods.
During the investigation into the events ten years later, Officer James disappeared. He is later revealed to have staged Lucy Purcell's overdose in Las Vegas and Tom Purcell's suicide in 1990. He is also most likely involved in Dan O'Brien's disappearance and subsequent killing. He commits these murders at the behest of his employer Edward Hoyt to cover up Isabel Hoyt's involvement in Will Purcell's accidental death and Julie Purcell's kidnapping.
When Wayne Hays discovers James was in Las Vegas the night of Lucy Purcell's overdose, he is kidnapped and interrogated by Hays and Roland West in a secluded barn, but tricks the detectives into uncuffing him. He then attacks Hays, forcing the detectives to shoot and kill him. He is the secondary antagonist of Season 3.
