Antigone "Ani" Bezzerides is a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective. She is one of the main characters in the second season of True Detective.
Biography
Bezzerides is a Ventura County Sheriff CID who is often at odds with the system she serves. A bizarre murder brings her together with two other law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California.
Elvis Ilinca is Ani's cop partner.
Events Before Season 2
In the childhood Ani and her sister Athena were abandoned by her mother. She was in the "Good People" commune with her father Elliot. Ani was in group with other 4 unknown people from whom 2 ended up in jail and other 2 committed suicide. It's possible that she was sexually abused in the childhood.
Personality
Ani's character starts of as rebellious & hypocritical. She seems to be somewhat tomboyish. A rough drinker who stays late at clubs and picks up fight with bouncers. She has a proclivity to do something really unconventional on the bed that can freak out a guy. Ani is suspicious of the world and males in particular that she carries knifes (a hidden blade in her sock) all the time as a protection measure. She tries to be like a mother figure to her sister, stating that she could do something good with her life. She believes her job is a virtuous plastering for personal downfalls like her failed marriage. Ani is angry at her father for his "free-will" values and also at the fact that he did nothing to stop her mother from contemplating suicide.
Her apartment is bundled with martial arts related reading materials - Musashi's A Book of Five Rings, Hagakure: Book of the Samurai, Master of the Blade and a book simply titled "Knives". A major portion of her wall showcases a collection of knives made of wood, metal, ceramic of various sizes. Ani practises knife wielding on a wooden dummy.
